This picture is one of many clifftop scenes painted by Laura Knight whilst she was working in the Newlyn artists' colony in Cornwall. The picture would have been painted from sketches made on the spot. The red of the young woman's dress increases the intensity of the blue sea and sky. Ripples on the surface of the pool create pattern. Vigorous brushwork gives liveliness to the painting. The realism and attractive colours of pictures like this made them very popular.
