Evening at Boothby by Winifred Nicholson 50x70cm PosterProduced with permission from the Nicholson Estate.
This view was painted from the window of Winifred Nicholson's family home at Boothby in Cumbria, where she lived from 1939. Although evening, the scene is strikingly bright. Winifred Nicholson often painted flowers against a landscape as a means of exploring the relationship between colour and natural light. In this picture, lilac flowers are placed against pastel green grass. Orange hues on the flowers relate to the autumn foliage in the background. The style is deliberately unnaturalistic, reflecting Winifred Nicholson's interest in abstract forms.
