Morpeth Bridge by Thomas Girtin. Limited Edition Poster 50x70cmMorpeth Bridge by Thomas Girtin. Limited Edition Poster 50x70cm. Original painting is held in the Laing Art Gallery. TWCMS: D4812. This important watercolour was painted from sketches made during Thomas Girtin's extended tour of Northumberland in 1800. It is painted on thick, slightly rough paper, which breaks up the colour and helps create a sense of air and weather. Bare paper has been left for the two tiny figures on the bridge. The harmonious gold, warm brown, and grey watercolour washes have been applied quite freely, with the minimum of pencil drawing. Girtin has also abandoned the preliminary grey wash for shadows used by earlier artists.
