Old Chapel by L.S. Lowry 50x70cm PosterOld Chapel by L.S. Lowry 50x70cm Poster. Actual image size 40 x 54cm. Original painting held in the Laing Art Gallery. TWCMS: B6677. L.S. Lowry made several long visits to the North East in the 1960s. He enjoyed painting the coast near Sunderland, and also painted some views in Newcastle. This picture shows the chapel on the corner of Horatio Street, near City Road in Newcastle. Like most of Lowry's pictures, it shows a mass of hurrying figures backed by tall buildings. The picture also uses Lowry's characteristic style of heavily outlined architecture and thin, stick-like figures against a blank, whitish background. According to the artist, he generally invented the figures in his pictures.
