Stone Pickers by Sir George Clausen 50x70cm PosterThe Stone Pickers by Sir George Clausen 50x70cm Poster. Actual image size 38 x 52cm. Original painting is held in the Laing Art Gallery. TWCMS: B8126. This teenage girl is picking up stones from the fields so they could be sown and harvested more easily. This portrait was painted out in the fields around George Clausen's Hertfordshire home. Clausen painted with square-ended brushes, which blurred the outlines dividing the figure from the background. Clausen's aim was to emphasise the unity of the workers and their environment. This approach was influenced by French Rural Naturalist painters of some years earlier.
