Women with Lilies by Thomas Armstrong A2 PosterThis is one of a pair of pictures originally owned by Thomas Smith (1831-1903), M.P. for Tynemouth. The paintings were set into the ornately decorated walls of the dining room of his London house. Female figures in revealing Greek-style drapery were popular subjects with many artists and collectors in the Victorian period. Thomas Armstrong was part of the Aesthetic Movement of artists, whose pictures were characterised by curving patterns and decorated flat surfaces.
